Too Much Rain Leads to Tragedy

It's been raining like crazy since this past Saturday. We've had the rainiest month on record. Just prior to this deluge we had been experiencing a drought for most of the summer. And more rain is expected today and tomorrow. We are finally going to dry out and see the sun this weekend.

Unfortunatley, the heavy rains caused a tragic accident here yesterday. A mother and her child, who were waiting for a bus, were electrocuted when lightining struck a power line. It fell into some standing water near where the woman and child were. A man on the bus leapt off to aid them and he too was killed. The bus driver was injured when he also tried to help. This all happened during a terrible downpour yesterday afternoon, a downpour I was driving through to get home.

We've had so much rain in such a short period of time that on that particular street the rain was up to the bumpers of cars. So, yes, there was a lot of deep standing water and the combination of that and the lightinting striking that pole was a tragic conflation of terrible events.

What was also sad was that the first responders to the scene could do nothing to help the vicitms until the utility people arrived to turn off the power. Bystanders also tried to help but were pulled back as they would have been electrocuted too.

All very, very sad.

Oh, man, that's heart rending on both accounts. I heard there are houses slipping into the lake near Winona, MN because of the flooding.

I wish you could send some rain our way. It is so hot and the dryness seems to make it worse. Sad to hear about the accident. You just never know what is going happen in life.

I've been telling others about the 1000 word a day blog. When you get a link for it, send it to me and I'll pass it on.

They identifed the victims yesterday. A young woman in her twenties and her 2-year old daughter. The man who tried to help her was a 22 year old friend, the fiance of her best friend who was also there and a witness to this terrible tragedy. The young mother's 7 year old son was also hurt as he tried to help his mother and sister. It all happened so fast that people at first thought the mother had just slipped in the water. They didn't even know about the live wire that had fallen to the ground. The bus driver, even after he was shocked and knocked back on the bus, mangaged to lock the doors of the bus to keep others from leaving it and getting electrocuted.

It just breaks my heart.

Yes, the flooding is very bad here in Wisconsin too with one village having been hit particuarly hard.

I've heard about the terrible heat, Dixie. I truly wish we could send you guys the extra water. It was raining hard again this morning. A week of pretty much steady rain!

I'll definitely do that about the blog.

What a terribly sad story. That man trying to help his friend and the bus driver doing what he did - both very brave, but both very tragic. You guys will be in my thoughts and I hope the rain stops soon.

It's still raining but we're supposed to get a break sometime this weekend. I've lived here all my life and I've never seen it rain like this!
